Childhood Spaceship Awesomeness, Part II

Lately I have been obsessed with a ghost from my childhood. You may have known it as STAR BLAZERS, as I did - an americanized version of a Japanese anime from 1974. It seems like almost all of my friends somehow missed this as a kid - I am still trying to see if anyone else remembers. Of course it could have gotten lost among the flashier He-Man, Thundercats, Go-bots and GiJoe cartoons.

I had largely forgotten about the show - which was pretty cheesy and poorly animated, until I was watching one of my favorite shows last year. 'Dogfights' from the History channel ran a segment recounting the sinking of the Japanese flagship Yamato in WWII (See Death of the Japanese Navy). I immediately recognized the lines and proportion of the ship as the spaceship from Star Blazers.

Looking through Netflix watch it now (oh how I love thee) - I found a movie version of the original Japanese story. It was condensed from the long epic series, so I watched to see what I remembered. As it turns out, not much, since the version I saw had been severely butchered.

The Japanese version of the story (Space Battleship Yamato) isn't just a silly kids cartoon - there are some real stakes and adult situations, even some graphic flashbacks to world war II. The scope and the feel of just the 2 hour movie was so different than what I remember, barring one or two terribly cheesy storylines and characters.

I am not sure it is the material or the viewer, but I was floored at the themes that the story suggests, especially after watching the Dogfights episode. If you view the cartoon through the lens of a country that experienced that naval loss - the story of Space Battleship Yamato takes on all kinds of significance. The last hope of a great power sets out on a last-ditch effort to strike at a far stronger adversary...but in SBY the underdog wins.

The story still apparently has some resonance - I found a trailer for an upcoming CGI laden version coming out of Japan this year - if it has even half of the strong points of the cartoon I underestimated as a kid - it could be pretty gripping. Now I just hope it makes it here, eventually...

After bemoaning the price and the boring nature of bathroom hardware out there, I decided to give it a shot on my own (with the aid of home depot). And taking design cues from Bob's great muffler stand (that now lives in the bathroom) here are my easy Steampunk Bath Fixtures!

Included in the concept are regenerative brakes that you throttle backwards to engage. Interesting, no?

Here is one more concept - taking a very small engine and mating it to a beefy mountain bike - you get uber - small, very nimble motorcross!

Owners Kenneth and Giana Lomenzo and their family discovered the colt by accident when it was born prematurely to one of their other miniature horses. Veterinarians tending the animal said it was one of the smallest survivors they had seen.

Hadiah, a female Sumatran tiger cub, makes her public debut at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The cub's name, which means "gift" in Sumatran, was announced prior to the cub being shown.

Cutkosky's team is also working on a geckolike robot, called Stickybot, designed to climb smooth surfaces like glass. Stickybot's feet are covered with thousands of synthetic "stalks" modeled after the tiny hairs on geckos' feet. These filaments interact with a surface by way of attractions called van der Waals forces, which cause them to adhere when pulled in a certain direction.

An immature burrowing owl stalks through the grass surrounding the hole in which two parents and five offspring live off Via Veneto Drive in Punta Gorda, Fla. Burrowing owls are known to live in dry, open areas with no trees and short grass. Populations are declining in many areas mainly due to collisions with cars. In this particular nest, two of the seven offspring were killed by an automobile.

Willy, a 1-year-old cat is photographed Thursday, with a display of several pairs of garden gloves that he took from unknown yards in his neighborhood in Pelham, N.Y. Willy has brought home nine pairs of gloves and five singles over several weeks laying them on his owners' front or back porches.

First - a sketchy story about a 120 mph crash in a MILLION dollar car with NO injuries...wasn't even legally owned!

ENZO-GATE...I don't know if this has made the news in the rest of the country, but we have an entertaining story developing here in Southern California. Yesterday morning, police found a million dollar Ferrari Enzo completely wrecked on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, apparently after running into a pole at 120 miles per hour during a drag race with a Mercedes-Benz SLR.

Nobody was hurt (!), but the car's owner, Stefan Eriksson, provided police with the following alibi: he wasn't driving the car. He was only a passenger. The driver was a "German guy named Dietrich" who ran away right after the crash, leaving Eriksson to take the fall. Eriksson doesn't know anything more about the guy.

The official word is that "detectives are skeptical of that explanation." Ya think?
