Links of the Week - Motorcycle Edition

A very pretty version of the Valkyrie -

I have a lot of hope for the new version of electic motorcycle. Vectrix is a company that is starting out with very efficient scooters, but wants to move up to performance sportbikes.
Included in the concept are regenerative brakes that you throttle backwards to engage. Interesting, no?

This 3 wheeler sounds like a lot of fun...

Here is one more concept - taking a very small engine and mating it to a beefy mountain bike - you get uber - small, very nimble motorcross!

LINKS of the WEEK - STEAMPUNK edition.

Talking to my in-laws the other day about our shared love of Steampunk, I realized I had been saving a bunch of photos and links describing it. I thought I would gather them all in one place and send them a link...so fun!
I am interspersing some links with photos of some of Christopher Conte's work -

First, an introduction
A great animated movie in the style

A great gallery and article on the phenomenon

and some people mentioned in the article

one of my personal favorites - steampunk star wars

one especially for cari and bob - steampunk motorcycles

For Cari, as well - a raygun

a gallery of cool stuff

parts for the steampunk project

a (kind of slow) mechanical lion

and a related but somewhat off topic blog for cari and bob - skull a day!

It's Just Like, It's Just Like, a mini-CAR

I am such a geek for small cars - here are some links I saw recently on Car and Driver that make me excited like a little girl...

---
here are a BUNCH of cute small cars to look at, some familiar, some concepts.

First, the Scions -

the old ones -

and the new ones -

Some good press on the Fit -

And what is billed as a fancy Festiva replacement!

A french minicar (make sure and check out the detail photos) -

This is rad - an electric mini with motors in the wheels - note that there isn't a backup mechanical brake system, hence the wood blocks under the wheels in the photos -

A cool Nissan Scion-killer -

A funny-lookin Fiat -

The new Justy. In my opinion - Subaru needs more cars like this in the US! especially if they offer a 4WD again! -

Of course, the Smart ForTwo -

And Toyota's take on it -

And another one from VW, about the same size -

One more cute one, for good measure - designed to look like a sportbike!

I have decided that if I ever become a hiphop artist (this looks to be, like, 90% probable), my stage name will be 'C Prompt'.

I have the hiphop computer nerd demographic covered, if nothing else.

And the emoticon -

kind of looks like an alien bulb-head half smiling.

Action Pants Takedown.

Wow - A whole month since I have posted, I must have a life or something...

So the next couple of videos are, apparently, widespread. Laugh if you haven't seen them yet.

Puppyduck

Will it Blend? Great way to sell blenders:

- Marbles

- Iphone

And my favorite -

- Glow Sticks.

Lets take it down to the corner pub and discuss.

Love Chuck.

My Companys Finest Hour...

This building, an example of so-called 'mimetic' architecture, has become sort of an in-joke around the office. Can you guess what the company sells?

More Here and story Here.

This Post, it is NEW.

This plane, it is BIG.

This plane, it is SMALL.

This water bottle, it is FUNNY.

These pants, they are DANGEROUS.

This clock, it is AWESOME.

These bicyclists, they are LAZY.

This Egg, it is SCRAMBLED.

Links of the Week - A mixed bag

Some of these videos are old, like this kinetic sculpture movie or this beard-grower. Some are new, like microsoft screens demos or a baby vs. a breakdancer. Some make me feel like I am eight again, and some make my palms sweat.

And some are just cool pictures of squirrel jedis.

List, I banish Thee...

A friend of mine, months ago, asked me about an all-time great album list. She said she was developing her own. Being a list geek, I started one too. But what were the guidelines? Best ever albums? Most influential on my development? Albums to take with on a desert island? Top 5? 10? 50? It was way too broad, way too slippery. So it sat on my computer for months. And then I emailed her, and she had too abandoned hers for much the same reason, but had stopped much earlier (to her credit). So it sat for a few more months. And frankly, I am sick of looking at it. So here it is, I don't want to see it again. The internets can have it.

In no order, except alphabetical.

TOP ALBUMS EVER (for me - or not really. Who knows?)

Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
Beck - Stereopathetic Soulmanure
Belly - Star
Bjork - Debut
Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong with Love
Cake - Fashion Nugget
Cornershop - When I was Born for the 7th Time

First Indian Pizza, Now THIS!!!

I can't imagine the downside for MINI - I mean, same base performance, same price - these are going to be even more insanely popular than they are now. I hope this is not a hoax...

Indian Pizza - Woo Hoo! Is it true?!?

One of the bestest things about SF is Indian Pizza at Zantes -

Things I missed Edition -

A short post - I promise that soon I will return to my previous posting speed.

Things I missed in the last couple of weeks...

Dear God...this looks dangerous....(video). Wish I would have been there.

Speaking of danger... these guys - have a local group! Just youtube parkour for ideas of what their knees will look like in a couple of years.

I also missed this 2 days ago - sounds like it would have been fun!

I wonder if Cal's whiskey club gets this expensive?

And last - not sure where this came from - but it' funny. Some unsafe language.

Cool photo -

Links of the Week - Last Day at the Job edition

Short one this week - busy training my replacement robot at the job on Friday.

This is cool, but I don't really know what it is...

Amazing fishtanks.

When Mash-Ups meet Automobile design...it's like that Johnny Cash song 'One Piece at a Time' but still it manages to look cool....

And finally - an awesome robot movie - takes a while to load on not super high speed, but it is worth it.

Chad, on to greener pastures, but first, CANADA!!!

Thursday Cuteness -

From the AP -

Gabriella Lomenzo, 5, cuddles a six-day-old baby miniature horse named "Miracle" at her home in Waco, Texas. Owners Kenneth and Giana Lomenzo and their family discovered the colt by accident when it was born prematurely to one of their other miniature horses. Veterinarians tending the animal said it was one of the smallest survivors they had seen.

Hadiah, a female Sumatran tiger cub, makes her public debut at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The cub's name, which means "gift" in Sumatran, was announced prior to the cub being shown.

A whole new world!

So Nate suggested a while back that I put all of these links on a bloggy type thing. Here you go. Note that most if not all of my past posts are here, somewhere. I didn't include any of the attached files or photos, and some of the formatting is wonky, but it will improve as I go. Feel free to comment here, as well!

And who knows, maybe this will actually turn into an actual (not just weekly) blog.

The post below is the first NEW post!

chad

Bloggy Weekly Linky Thingy.

This one is great. Nate, I expect you to memorize and repeat!

Mostly for Cal - just...wow. How long is decompression for a dive to the bottom of that pool?

Amazing trees!

Thought this was a pretty cool idea - modularity RULES. There are a lot of other similar designs on the same page.

I don't remember if I sent this one before. But it made me shoot milk out my nose at lunch.

So cool, unfortunately someone burnt it down recently. Damn dirty hippies!

So cute. I want.

chad - from the oh-so-over-world of blog.

Links of the Week - Ralph Macchio edition...(Fri, 9 Mar 2007)

OK - looong week for me. I am ready for the weekend. Of course I will be sitting in a tent in the RAIN this weekend, but I am ready.
First off - sucky news - have any of you seen that badass one legged guy in REI in the wheelchair, selling bikes? He is actually a wicked mountain biker, who just got his ride STOLEN. Lame, lame thiefs.
If you haven't seen this - George Takei's response to Tim Hardaway's anti-gay tirade...great, semi-NSFW tho it WAS broadcast on a tv network.
Pretty interesting take on the end of DRM, from an unlikely source -
I want your help in checking this test out, especially if you were raised with some sort of dialect (Anastasia). It seems (according to some podcasts I listen to) to be scarily accurate, even though it is only 13 questions.
I couldn't leave you without an EXCELLENT youtube movie - watch it and be overwhelmed by 80's nostalgia...watch for all of the cameos!
Finally - find the attached PDF. A study to try and win an ignobel prize:
This was written by Adam Savage:
of Mythbusters fame. (my favorite, favorite show). Definitely worth some laughs.
chad

Links of the Week - Steampunk edition...(Fri, 2 Mar 2007)

OK - been hearing this term a lot - pretty cool from a design standpoint...
My favorite so far? These fixtures...so cool...
Especially this one -
and then this came up on Mefi yesterday -

And last - glad I am not a bball player - a snowboarding accident can cost you 500K!
Wait - that's only 10% of his salary - NEVER MIND!!!!

And finally this week - you may have heard of the New York Times 20 questions to ask before marraige, but I found the Metafilter comments on it MUCH more entertaining, especially this excerpt:
The three questions I ask everybody I meet in order to decide if I can love them:
1. Let us assume you met a rudimentary magician. Let us assume he can do five simple tricks -- he can pull a rabbit out of his hat, he can make a coin disappear, he can turn the ace of spades into the Joker card, and two others in a similar vein. These are his only tricks and he can't learn any more; he can only do these five. HOWEVER, it turns out he's doing these five tricks with real magic. It's not an illusion; he can actually conjure the bunny out of the ether and he can move the coin through space. He's legimately magical, but extremely limited in scope and influence.
Would this person be more impressive than Albert Einstein?
2. Let us assume that a fully grown, completely healthy Clydesdale horse has his hooves shackled to the ground while his head is held in place with thick rope. He is conscious and standing upright, but completely immobile. And let us assume that --- for some reason -- every political prisoner on earth (as cited by Amnesty International) will be released from captivity if you can kick this horse to death in less than twenty minutes. You are allowed to wear steel-toed boots.
Would you attempt to do this?
3. Let us assume that there are two boxes on a table. In one box, there is a relatively normal turtle; in other, Adolf Hitler's skull. You have to select one of these items for your home. If you select the turtle, you can't give it away and you have to keep it alive for two years; if either of these parameters are not met, you will be fined $999 by the state. If you select Hitler's skull, you are required to display it in a semi-prominent location in your living room for the same amount of time, although you will be paid a stipend of $120 per month for doing so. Display of the skull must be apolitical.

Which option do you select?

In this particular nest, two of the seven offspring were killed by an automobile.

I don't know what you are talking about, so here is a picture of a swimming raccoon.
And also some cute foxes. Not foxy cuties.
A litter of four young bat-eared foxes emerge from their birthing den at the San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park Thursday in San Diego. This unique species of African fox is rarely seen in zoos and this is the first litter ever born at the Park.
And a cool set of photos showing just how insignificant we are.
Have a nice weekend!

How I imagine life in the US Army, based on the commercials I’ve seen.

General Stone: Alright men, listen up! Our nation is at war and the whole world is counting on us to protect freedom. That leaves us with just one option.

Bob: Rock climbing?

General Stone: Exactly. There’s a steep mountain in the middle of an unpopulated desert. We need someone to go there by himself, climb the mountain, and put a flag on the top.

Bob: I’ll do it.

General Stone: Excellent! Here’s the flag.

Bob: Cool.

General Stone: Alright, let’s see...we also need someone to ride a JetSki. How about you, Jackson?

Jackson: I don’t know, General, I’m sort of afraid of getting hurt. Can I stay here and work on computers?

General: Yes. Everybody who wants to can stay and work on computers.

Brian: General?

General: What’s up?

Brian: Can I take a break? I kind of want to go to college.

General: No problem, here’s $30,000 in cash.

Brian: Great, thanks.

General: Alright men, that’s it for the day.

Jackson: Hey look! It’s my friends and family.

Friends and family: Hey, nice uniform. We’re proud of you.

Jackson: Thanks. See you in a couple weeks.

Friends and family: Yeah, see you then.
